The ideal home computer can vary from one situation to another. First, we consider the number of users for the computer.
A single user computer is usually the smallest computer you can find out in the market. For the purpose of internet browsing and some office work, you don't need a computer that has much more than what is needed to run the operating system comfortably. In today's technology: a dual core CPU, 2 GB RAM, and 250+GB HDD.
Multi user computers need a bit more than the basic computer. Mostly, you need to have a much bigger HDD (750+GB.) If you plan to do a lot of user switching, you probably want a quad core CPU and 4GB of RAM. Other than that, your onboard video, sound, and network card will do just fine for going on the internet, a little office and home work, video watching, and basic gaming.
The other question you need to answer is your need for mobility. It is true, a laptop is so portable, fun to play with, goes anywhere, works when electricity goes out, and so many more perks. The issue is, a desktop will always out perform a laptop that costs the same amount. Laptops are not very friendly when it comes to hardware maintenance and repair. Upgrades are extremely limited on most models. Laptops overheat easily and need their air ducts cleaned frequently. Don't get me wrong, I dont mean to say that laptops are not good computers. But, unless you need to take your computer with you on the road, or want to read your email or check your facebook in the backyard, i suggest you look at what a desktop can do for you.
